Road Safety Road Show

Road Safety Road Show

Sunday, 11 October 2009

The Road Safety Road Show is a round robin style lecture/event that will give students of Walford and North Shropshire College the opportunity of getting interactive and hands on road safety education from a number of partners about a variety of road safety issues.

Partners involved include; West Mercia Police, Shropshire/Telford and Wrekin Council, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, Safer Roads Partnership and the Shropshire Advanced Motorists.

Gemma Lovering, Recreation and Extra Curricular Coordinator for the College says of the event, ‘This is the first time that the Road Safety Road Show has run and I am very please that the college has had the opportunity to host it. The students will get the chance to speak to the different organisations that try to make our roads safe. It will be invaluable in helping to make our students better drivers and safer on the road, especially around the more rural location of Walford. We will also be looking at having the Road Show at our Oswestry Campus sometime around Christmas.’

West Mercia Police aim to make the session interactive highlighting issues such as drink diving – using a breathalyser and beer goggles to help illustrate the educational message. Drug drive education will also be a focus along with the road side impairment test being demonstrated.

The Safer Roads Partnership van will be in attendance illustrating and educating the students with regards to speeding. The crew will explain the van’s use and why they are used in the areas that they are, and also their capability and how they help in reducing Road Traffic Collisions.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service will use the trailer they have and will bring along a car that has failed its MOT together with a pimped up car with illegal features, illustrating insurance implications of modifications. They will also speak to students about issues such as over crowding and peer pressure giving them the tools to speak up to peers to slow down or for them to wear seat belts etc.

The Shropshire Advanced Motorist group will be illustrating to pupils the free course that they are running in partnership with Shropshire Fire and Rescue service which is available for young drivers aged 17-25 years old that live, work or study in Shropshire. The course will consists of one lecture evening and four observed runs in your own vehicle which must be in a road worthy condition all free of charge. The course is based on the police road craft course and teaches drivers improved cornering techniques, advanced observation skills all of which will not only increase a driver’s safety on the roads but increase the enjoyment gained from driving.

Around 100 of the students at the Walford Campus will be taking part in the session on October 15th. With weather conditions set to deteriorate and more students passing their driving test as the academic year progresses, this road show is of paramount importance to help keep our students safe both in their leisure time and travelling to and from college.
